Clear quartz

The dwarves’ stone

Clear quartz, or rock crystal, is water-clear quartz. In Norway it was called dvergstein, the dwarf stone, because people believed the dwarves forged it inside the mountain.

History and belief

The ancient Greeks believed clear quartz was ice frozen so hard it would never melt. The word crystal comes from the Greek word for ice.

In Norwegian folk belief the stone was called dvergstein or dvergsmide, the dwarves’ work, and the name lives on in place names such as Dvergasteinsbotn on the Hardangervidda plateau. In modern crystal tradition clear quartz is called the master healer, a stone that amplifies intentions and other crystals.

Experience

What many people say

Many use clear quartz when setting intentions, because it is as clear as a blank page. It is a lovely place to start if you are new to crystals.

Knowledge

What the stone really is

Clear quartz is pure quartz with a hardness of 7. Quartz is piezoelectric: it produces an electric charge when it is squeezed, and it flexes when a current is applied. The brothers Jacques and Pierre Curie discovered this in 1880.

That is why there is quartz in nearly every quartz watch. The crystal vibrates 32,768 times a second, and the watch counts the vibrations. Quartz is also used in optical instruments and electronics.
