The stars and your numbers

Astrology and numerology are ancient languages for talking about who we are. Here you can work out your own chart, read about the signs and see what happened when astrology was tested.

The zodiac

The zodiac divides the sun’s yearly path across the sky into twelve equal parts, named after constellations. The signs are grouped into four elements: fire, earth, air and water. The system as we know it took shape in the Greek and Roman world about 2,000 years ago.

When astrology was tested

In 1985 physicist Shawn Carlson published a double-blind test in the journal Nature. 28 astrologers were given more than a hundred birth charts and asked to match each one to the right personality profile. They did no better than chance.

It is also worth knowing that Earth’s axis slowly changes direction. So today the sun stands in a different constellation on your birthday than when the signs were fixed.

Many people still use astrology as a mirror and a shared language. That is fine, as long as we do not make big decisions about others based on their star sign.

Numerology and the life path number

Numerology gives numbers a meaning of their own, and the tradition is often linked to Pythagoras. You find your life path number by adding up all the digits of your date of birth until one digit remains. 11, 22 and 33 are called master numbers and are not reduced.

Tradition

The Chinese zodiac

In Chinese tradition each year belongs to one of twelve animals, in a twelve-year cycle, and one of five elements. The year begins at Chinese New Year, which falls between 21 January and 20 February. If you were born in January or February, you may belong to the year before.
