Tradition

Where angel numbers come from

The idea that repeating numbers are messages from angels became known through the book “Angel Numbers 101” by Doreen Virtue, published in 2008. It builds on older numerology, where each number has its own meaning.

Virtue herself became a Christian in 2017 and later distanced herself from her earlier New Age work. Angel numbers have lived on regardless, and are a huge phenomenon online today.

Knowledge

Why do I keep seeing the same number?

Psychology has a name for it: the frequency illusion, also called the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon. When something has come to matter to you, the brain notices it everywhere, and you remember the hits but not all the times the number did not appear.

The linguist Arnold Zwicky gave the phenomenon its name in 2006. It is explained by selective attention and confirmation bias, two completely ordinary features of human thinking.

Experience

How we use angel numbers

We see the number as a reminder to pause. When you see 111, you can ask: What am I thinking about right now? It is a lovely habit, whatever you believe about where the number comes from.
