        In every village there were women people turned to when someone was ill or misfortune struck. They knew herbs, healing charms and old remedies, and the knowledge passed from mother to daughter.

        Knowledge that stood out could also become dangerous. In Finnmark, 91 people were sentenced to death in the witch trials between 1600 and 1692. Today the Steilneset Memorial in Vardø honours them.
